Mathematics
The Subtraction Strip Board is a Montessori math material designed to provide a concrete, hands-on approach to learning subtraction. The material consists of a wooden board with 12 squares by 18 squares arranged in a grid, with the numerals 1 to 18 printed across the top. This setup allows children to work with subtraction combinations involving numbers from 1 to 18, helping them visualize and internalize subtraction concepts.
The material comes with a wooden box that contains the following components:
9 red wooden strips and 9 blue wooden strips, each printed with numerals 1 to 9.
18 natural wooden strips of varying lengths, which help children physically represent the quantities involved in subtraction.
How the Material Works:
Children select combinations of numbers from 1 to 18 and subtract them using the strips.
They can use the red and blue strips to represent the minuend (the number to be subtracted from) and the subtrahend (the number being subtracted), and place the strips on the board in the corresponding squares.
The child can visually and physically see how one number is subtracted from another, reinforcing the concept of subtraction.
By selecting different combinations, children strengthen their understanding of subtraction tables and the relationship between numbers.
